Tips For Finding A College Roommate

College life means living away from your parents, staying in a dormitory or apartment and dealing with roommates. Depending on how you adjust to your specific situation, having a roommate has its pros and cons. But with a good and honest communication towards each other, your roommate can even end up as your best friend.

In various aspects of life, an individual needs to make some adjustments notably in tough situations and college life is just one of them. However, we can always find ways to make these challenging situations work for the best. So when it comes to finding a college roommate, the first priority is to establish a good rapport with that person by getting along with him or her.

Of course, you can always choose your roommate especially if you and several friends have decided to study in the same college or university. But if you’re staying in a dorm, you might just be assigned to a room with earlier occupants leaving you with no choice. In worse cases though, you can still request to be transferred to another room should the dorm administrator finds a valid reason to do so.

Keep in mind that your character will truly be tested in situations when you have to deal with a new person in your life. Flexibility is key to adjusting well and who knows, you may even learn something from your new roommate. So it should not really bother you at all if you know not who you will be living with for several months on or off campus.

Open communication is very important in establishing a good relationship. Before classes start, it’s best that you discuss certain house rules with your roommate. Get to know each other’s interests and differences so you can make adjustments along the way and prevent problems. If there’s something that you don’t like, tell your roommate right away. If you’re in a bad mood and would like some quiet time, say so because other people can’t read your mind.

Being respectful is also a great virtue. If your roommate doesn’t like loud music while studying or bringing in too many friends in your place, then respect his or her wishes. If you can do this, you will earn her respect as well.

Compromise if you can’t agree on certain things. It doesn’t hurt to do that. It just takes a lot of patience to do this especially when there are some traits of your roommate that irritate you. Just bear in mind that compromising is a matter of working together to find a solution and not surrendering yourself to another individual.

However, if you are cheerful and courteous, you can surely have a big influence on your roommate. A positive attitude spreads around so if you are polite and helpful, she will end up following what you do. A pleasant greeting each morning or before going to bed at night or say before an exam will go a long way in building friendships.

These tips are the basics in helping you make college life easier while you’re away from home. Have an open mind and learn to adjust well to make your experience a pleasant one.
