How to Get Along with Your Landlord

Some people get skeptical when they hear the word landlord. Some think landlords are bossy, demanding and strict. But that is not true in all situations because landlords are just normal people who do business by providing places to live in for a fee and making sure that their rules are followed. Each is different from the other and each may have different styles of management.

If you’re a renter or a college student planning to rent an apartment, you will have no choice but to deal with your landlord and get along with him or her well. It won’t be a big concern, though, since your interaction will only be less frequent compared to dealing with a roommate. But you know what? It would be to your advantage if you know how to build a positive relationship with your landlord.

Get to know your landlord when you apply for rent. In most cases, the landlord may only be the person assigned to manage apartment complexes and not the real owner. Most states, though, require that landlords reveal the name of the owner and management firm.

So landlords are basically there to oversee the apartment units like whether repairs are needed before, during or after occupancy and make sure that rules are being followed by tenants. Being friendly with them is a good start and who knows, you can even establish a long-term friendship.

Understand that landlords may be preoccupied with a lot of things including maintenance, rental payments, tenants and complaints so it’s natural that they sometimes get moody. In this case, you will have to be flexible and respectful of their situation. If you have an important issue to discuss with him or her, might as well call beforehand and schedule for an appointment.

As a tenant, keep in mind to stick with the rules to avoid problems. Read carefully your rental agreement and ask for clarifications about house rules. If you’re planning to remodel or redecorate for instance, do ask your landlord about it before you undertake any project.

If you’re a good follower, your landlord will truly be happy and will remember you always. So pay your rent on time, keep your apartment clean and in good shape, give the proper notice in advance when something comes up and be courteous to other tenants. The last thing you want is to have a lawsuit with your landlord.

Having a pleasant relationship with your landlord brings a lot of benefits. Did you know that some landlords give a resigning bonus of up to $500 each year to renters when their leases expire? This is actually a come-on for renters to stay longer in the place which, in turn, also benefits the landlord.

Another thing is that when you get along well with each other and you’re a prompt payer, there’s good chance that you won’t get a raise in your rent. If you’ve been staying in the apartment for many years and don’t have issues with the place and other tenants, then landlords will be grateful for that.

Just remember that respect and open communication is vital in promoting a favorable relationship between you and your landlord.
